While not particularly bright by modern standards, I found/find them to be perfectly adequate for indoor use. If I recall correctly, they were the Nite Ize 1W LED drop in replacements, which are still sold today, and are suitable for use in most C or D cell flashlights using anywhere from two to six cells. One is still going strong today, one seems to have been misplaced, and one fell victim to battery leakage (the great bane of alkaline batteries and all devices that use them). I bought several LED conversions for Maglites during that period. This heyday was a relatively brief period of time after the introduction of bright, practical, and cost-effective white LEDs (and associated drive circuitry) but before many of the older, larger flashlight companies adopted LEDs. The heyday of the LED conversion is long past. Good luck on your search, and keep us posted. It is more of a spot pattern than flood, giving a good throw, but I'd guess it's from the reflector being designed for an incan. If you want to keep it for sentimental reasons or an around-the-house torch, (and do not mind loosing some of the beam's adjustability), the Ludo Pam drop in works well enough (I've had the 4-6 cell in my 4D for three years now and it makes quite a difference from the original bulb. LED technology has become much more accesible these days, and it is cheaper to manufacture from the "ground up" than to modify or convert. In years past, you could've had a Terralux/Lightstar drop-in or a Malkoff Devices conversion, but Terralux became Sielo and dropped the hand held lighting business and I'm unable to find a cost effective alternative from Malkoff. Sorry to say this but, for the little research I made this might be your way:
